Criteria of Good Web-Design

Creating an ergonomically correct and user-friendly website that is simple to follow and from which information is easy to grasp, is an intimidating step. Designing a website itself is tedious if you are unclear about the criteria you want your website to qualify.  It must be noted that the goal of a website must not only be to attract visitors but also to retain their attention. The website must be compelling for the visitor to keep visiting the website. I have come across some flash website that has employed stunning graphics and animations, however the site goals and functionality remain ambiguous to me. Thereafter, despite the fact I was drawn by the awesome graphics, I have not visited the site.

A website must be designed so as to keep in mind that the site at least fulfill minimal criteria elicited here.

Efficiency: The website must be built in suitable technology so that the website loads in minimum time. Moreover the user interaction must be smooth and speedy. The webpage must be able to process the user request as rapidly as possible and make available the results to the visitor.

Functionally: Your website must be functional. Your visitor must instantaneously grasp the information he is looking for. You do not expect your corporate website to be fancy with embellishments that conceal the ‘real’ (required) details. Your site must serve the purpose. If you are designing your personal website or portfolio, it must emphasize on the section that showcases your work. Similar is the case with other websites.

Intuitive navigation: Nowadays, there are nearly countless websites on the web. On an average, a person views 10 to 50 pages per minute. You cannot afford to lose your visitor while he is finding the required information as he navigates through your site. Therefore the navigation in your website must be immensely user-friendly. You must design your website keeping in mind the most every kind of potential visitor. This will help you develop a navigation that is supportive for every visitor irrespective of his searching capabilities.

Effective Presentation of Information: Users must be appealed by design and drawn to content. This is the key to successful web-design.

Harmony & Balance between the constituent elements: The webpage must be balanced whereas the color scheme, layout and composition are concerned. You must not allocate excessive areas to any of the constituents in the field.

While designing, you must ensure that you produce an appealing website site you must not compromise the content, speed or functionality of the site.
