The Youth Culture and Cell Phones

Cell phones are becoming to today’s youth what rock and roll was to the youth in the 1960’s. Approximately 80 % of all teenagers have cell phones around the world, and have developed their own language and social groups away from the prying eyes of their parents.

In Japan, teenagers are obsessed with their cellular phones. Some experts estimate that 96 % of all the Japanese kids will have mobile phones by the time they reach high school. One study reveals that these kids spent between 90 and 125 minutes every single day on their phones, making use of them to read books, chat with friends, surf the Net, or perhaps listen to music. Many experts suggest that these youngsters are making use of these cell phones for security, as the level of usage went up with kids that were having issues at home.

US kids have used cell phones to form community groups and friendships away from their families, feeling that these phones ensured them the privacy that they wouldn’t usually have. While a few kids continue to talk to the parents of theirs, more would rather speak with them through text messaging to ensure that the kids don’t need to answer some questions that they don’t want to. This causes the issue of kids misunderstanding their parent’s mood because plain text messaging doesn’t show the big difference between anger and sarcasm. As cell phone use becomes a lot more prevalent, communication between parents and their children could be a lot more impersonal.

One other issue with today’s kids being obsessed with mobile phones is the point that some kids admit to texting while they’re driving. While several states have outlawed talking on a mobile phone while getting behind the wheel, it can be exciting to find out just how the government deals with the act of sending messages while driving. All things considered, the driver is able to maintain the phone out of sight as he text messages.

A major problem concerning youth and cell phones came to light in a survey of college pupils. Of 305 of these pupils, 40 % of cell phone users admitted they walked somewhere at night they will have never gone before they had their cell phones. ¾ of these pupils admitted that they felt more secure and safer due to these devices. In truth, experts agree that these pupils are definitely more susceptible since they’re not as likely to be having to pay attention to the surroundings of theirs as a lot of these cell phones users also admitted into walking in front of traffic while talking.

As more adolescents have use of cell phones, they might have to learn that as with everything else in life there’s a price to pay. Hopefully, for several of these kids, the cost is not really too high.
